On Tuesday, May 13, in the first semi-final of the 2025 Eurovision Song Contest in Basel, contest host Sandra Studer made all of Europe laugh with a witty and apt remark about Swiss thrift and sustainability.
"Switzerland is an ecological country and reuses everything multiple times, even former Eurovision participants," joked Sandra Studer, who herself stood on the Eurovision stage as Switzerland's representative three decades ago, on the live broadcast.
Sandra's joke immediately received a round of applause and laughter from the audience in the arena, and also quickly spread on social media, where fans called it one of the funniest highlights of the evening.
Sandra Studer returned to the contest as the host of the event - in 1991 she represented Switzerland in Rome with the song "Canzone per te", which then won fifth place.
This year's Eurovision Song Contest in Basel follows Switzerland's victory in 2024 with Nemo's song "The Code," which earned the country the right to host Europe's biggest song contest for the second year in a row.
The second semi-final will take place on Thursday, May 15, with the grand final scheduled for Saturday, May 17.
