In Lithuania, drivers may not carry a driver's license with them, in which case only a document proving personal identity is sufficient. However, another path is also being taken - after a while, the production of such a document will be abandoned, and instead everything will be transferred to the virtual space.
A digital driver's license will be tested in Lithuania next year, the Ministry of the Interior (MIA) announced last Monday.
It will be tested by the car-sharing company CityBee and its customers in cooperation with Regitra and the Ministry of Interior.
This means that drivers using the aforementioned car rental service will be able to have their driver's license on their phone. According to the ministry, this will not only allow the physical document to be dispensed with in the future, but will also facilitate the driver's identification every time they use transport services.
Regitra, together with the project partners, will assess how much e. driver's license is convenient for customers. Taking into account the recommendations and future implementation of e. driver's license, EU residents would no longer need to have a physical driver's license, and digital document interfaces would ensure data security, real-time transmission and traceability throughout Europe.
We want to ask you, how do you assess the decision to no longer need plastic driver's licenses?
