The Vilnius municipality together with the Vilnius correctional facility organized and cleaned the territory (about 2365 sq. m) near the Visitor's Monastery, Drujos st. 11. Previously, there was a production area of a strict regime correctional colony, contaminated with heavy metals and petroleum products.
After carrying out ecological studies in the territory of the former factory, excessive underground soil pollution was discovered. The municipality made sure that the territory was not dangerous for the environment and human health: after the removal of the buildings, foundations, hard surfaces above the contaminated soil areas, all the contaminated soil was excavated and removed, the plot was leveled, and slopes were formed. The works were performed by the contractor that won the public procurement, UAB "Vilniaus BDT".
The project value of the organized and cleared territory is 277,4 thousand. EUR, of which 263,5 thousand. EUR consists of European Union structural fund financing.
The Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Lithuania plans to build an officer training center on this plot. Near this area stands apartment buildings home, the International American School, Mykolos Sopočka hospice is located.
According to Halina Žukovska, Deputy Director of the Vilnius Correctional Facility, it is planned to build a training center for officers in the cleaned area at the beginning of 2024. About 5 million will be allocated to the project. Eur Norwegian financial mechanism program funds. It is intended to equip the center with learning facilities, where current and future officers could simultaneously train, as well as administrative facilities, sports infrastructure necessary for the training of officers, living quarters for students.
