September 24 At the Lithuanian Union of Architects, AB "Lithuanian railways" would initiate of the station the results of the architectural-urbanistic creative workshop of district transformation - recommendations of experts. The workshop was organized by the Union of Lithuanian Architects.
This workshop is the first step in implementing "Vilnius Connect" project that is intended to be restructured Vilnius railway station territory and establish a modern multifunctional mobility, business and leisure center in it, expand pedestrian and green spaces, improve the connection of the Naujininkai district with New Town and Old Town.
Urban planning teams of Lithuanian and foreign architects participated in the workshop: Bauland, Do Architects, MGMP, MMAP,Pupa", Outofbox, Unitectus, representatives of the Municipality, Railway and Bus Stations, activists of the surrounding communities, project developers, architecture students were also included.
Experts recommend reducing public transport impact on the space of the station square, shape its space by providing volumetric space elements, create a network of green spaces, develop a circular route for pedestrians and cyclists around the territory. To form seasonal greenery of local plants.
It is also recommended to strive to have one in common the station - the area would be convenient to change the type of travel. For this, it is necessary to ensure both underground and surface connections with the "Rail Baltica" railway branch and the main station, and to gather public and public functions around the station. According to experts, more intensive construction is possible in the northwestern part of the transport hub.
Balanced construction is recommended in the area, it is proposed to emphasize the eastern and western corners of the area. It is important to utilize and properly adapt the unique spatial structure of the existing production depots and to form a new center of attraction along Pelesos St., intended primarily for residents of Naujininkai.
Experts suggest restoring the historical street network as much as possible, and new connections should serve not only as bridges, but also as public spaces - their quantity must be rationally justified and evaluated. It is worth exploring the possibility of Pelesos st. to lower the traffic flow to the rail level, and to make the last public transport stop closer to the airport.
How will things go next?
Based on these recommendations, it is proposed to prepare several options and verify them by carrying out a strategic environmental impact assessment (SEIA), to conduct more detailed sociological surveys and to assess the already existing potential of public spaces in the surrounding districts (In the old town, in New City, in Naujinnikas, Rasas). It is necessary to organize architectural competitions for individual objects only when the general structure of the entire territory is clear.
In the near future, 2020 should also be launched. the preparation of the SPAV report was completed in the first half. At the same time, there will be public discussions and an expert group of creative workshops. The detailed plan of the territory is expected to be submitted for approval by 2021.
