In the near future, the first solar power plants will be installed on the roofs of the MRU Student House on Vilnius Didlaukis Street, which will produce and supply electricity to the university students living here.
All over the world, solar energy is considered not only as one of the cleanest, but also one of the cheapest ways to produce electricity. The analysis carried out by the EU shows that the Baltic countries have one of the most favorable conditions for the development of renewable energy, and in 2050 the country's energy needs could be met solely from renewable energy sources.
According to the rector of Mykolas Romeris University, prof. Dr. Ingos Žalėnienė, one of the university's strategic goals is to apply the principles of an environmentally friendly university as diversely and actively as possible in the university's study, research activities and environment: "We are already striving to model the university's study, research and student living and leisure spaces according to the principles of ecological, responsible consumption, as actively as possible apply measures to reduce the negative impact on the environment, and the construction of solar power plants is another example of the implementation of sustainable university activities".
It is planned that the two solar power plants installed on the Student House will produce about a tenth of the electricity required for the MRU Student House in the first year. The value of the solar power plant installation project is more than 60 euros. The project is implemented under the "Climate Change Program" from the joint funds of the "Climate Change Program" and the university. The investment is expected to pay for itself in about 000 years.
