Gediminas Paukštys, head of the construction management of the Vilnius development company that managed the construction project of the Lazdynai basin in Vilnius, which opened its doors to visitors this year, says that it was one of the most important and technically complex projects implemented by the company, the success of which, despite all the obstacles, was determined by the experience, competencies and negotiation skills of the team that worked on it. . So what is special about the most modern swimming pool in the Baltic States, what value did it create for the city and what lessons were learned during its construction?
Stands out with advanced solutions
The Lazdynai pool is considered the most modern in the Baltic States. And it is not for nothing that the most advanced engineering and technological solutions are installed in it. The complex is equipped with two pools that meet the highest international standards of the World Aquatics Federation of Water Sports - an Olympic-sized swimming pool of 50 m length with ten swimming lanes and a diving pool with eight 25 m long lanes and a special air cushion. Next to the latter, the only such 10-meter tower in Lithuania for jumping into the water and 7 springboards have been installed.
G. Paukštys, head of the construction management of the company that implemented the project, Vilnius Development Company, says that the swimming pool is of the highest level, and Vilnius can be proud to have one. He notes that a project of such scope and complexity and the challenges that had to be overcome during its implementation provided the company with valuable experience and allowed it to learn a number of important lessons.
"When implementing such large-scale projects, especially when specialists from different countries work on them, it is very important to find out and agree on clear concepts and definitions that all participants in the process would understand equally. This requires a lot of communication with team members and project partners. Only when all participants have the same understanding of the requirements and tasks can the project be successful. In addition, attention should be paid to the different technical requirements imposed on construction objects and processes in different countries", says G. Paukštys.
Ensures the safety of visitors and saves resources
Three automated systems ensure water circulation, cleanliness and appropriate temperature in both pools. Pool water is prepared in eight stages, seven of which are dedicated to water filtration and purification.
Automated solutions also help to ensure the safety of visitors. "For the first time in the Baltic States, smart drowning prevention technology notifies rescuers about objects that are still at the bottom of the pool even for just a few seconds, and the advanced legionellosis prevention system prevents outbreaks of this disease," says the company's construction management manager.
The complex is also equipped with the only automatic shower system of its kind in Lithuanian swimming pools with a heat recovery device that helps save energy resources. The depth of the pools can be adjusted by movable bottoms, and the modern "Swiss Timing" system is used to accurately record the athletes' results, which meets the requirements of the World International Swimming Federation (FINA).
"Moreover, the Lazdynai pool meets the highest international requirements for water sports - it is one of the best pools in the Baltic region," adds G. Paukštys.
It was motivated by the significance of the project for the city
According to the company's construction management manager, the challenges encountered during the development of the Lazdynai basin project taught the company and each contributing employee exceptional responsibility, and showed how important it is not to lose direction in non-standard situations and to persistently move towards the goal. G. Paukštys is happy that he managed to implement another important project for the people of Vilnius, which will help to ensure a more active and meaningful life of the citizens and will become an important sports facility for the whole country.
"From the very beginning, we felt how important and welcome this object is, not only to the Lazdynai community, but also to all Vilnius residents. As a result, the team put in a lot of effort to overcome all the challenges and successfully implement the project. The previous experience of some of the team members in working on large international projects was also extremely useful", notes G. Paukštys.
The project was implemented in cooperation between the Vilnius City Municipality and the Ministry of the Interior. The implementation of the Lazdynai basin project was handled by the Vilnius development company, and the main contractor of the basin was the Panevėžio statybos trestas company.
