In 2025, many of us will be looking for ways to make our homes more comfortable, with a particular focus on psychological well-being. This will also influence our decisions when choosing furniture and interior decorations – we will be more careful about their shapes, colors, functions, and we will look for connections with nature in our homes.
"We live in constant change. Sometimes the changes are bigger, sometimes smaller, and each person is unique. However, one thing unites us - we all have homes where it is good to be, communicate and spend time alone, work, rest and improve. When asked how they imagine their ideal home, as many as 44 percent of Lithuanian residents who participated in the "Life at Home" study say that, first and foremost, it should be a refuge from the hustle and bustle of the outside world, a place where you can relax and unwind. For more than a third of those surveyed, this helps maintain good psychological well-being. And this year, it will be at the center of all interior trends. This means that more attention will be paid to a relaxing environment, earthy tones, sleek shapes, natural materials and solutions that allow you to enjoy a clean and tidy home," says Morta Bučinskienė, Head of IKEA's Interior Design Department.
Relaxing environment
According to the interior designer, the most important trend this year will be to create cozy and relaxing spaces without sacrificing style. Comfortable, non-binding furniture and textiles that provide additional comfort will be extremely popular: bedspreads, cushions, etc. She also adds that large sofas and deep chairs with rounded corners will return to fashion, fitting into both modern and traditional interiors.
"A space for relaxation at home shouldn't cost much. In order to maintain a consistent interior style, you can do without additional purchases. Instead of looking for new furniture, think about what you already have that can serve as a relaxation corner: for example, a sofa or armchair with a footstool and a table. All you need is more cushions or a cozy blanket and you can enjoy time to yourself, opening a book or turning on a new movie," says M. Bučinskienė.
Earth tones and pastels
The interior designer says that this year, like last year, neutral-colored furniture will be combined with earth tones: muted blue, green, and other pastel shades. Dark wood will help create a sense of luxury in the home, and wallpaper with unique patterns, wooden panels, and decorative plaster finishes will add more depth and an even greater impression. If you like bold solutions, you can experiment by combining textiles with different patterns and orange or pink shades, which can be updated every season if desired.
"Another trend this year is unusual shapes and unique designs that fill homes with life. Textiles with geometric patterns and bright strokes of various colors will create a real feast for the eyes, but for balance, they are recommended to be combined with organic shapes, calm colors and natural accents," says M. Bučinskienė.
Biophilic design
The word “biophilic” comes from the Greek language and means love of life and all living things. Many people have an intuitive love for nature, and connecting with it helps them relax and feel at home, which in turn has a positive effect on their physical and psychological well-being.
The interior designer explains that 29 percent of Lithuanians who participated in the "Life at Home" survey identify a connection with nature as one of the most important factors that allow them to feel content and peaceful. To bring more nature into your home, you can use potted plants or colors reminiscent of being in nature, patterns, shapes, materials, sounds, and lighting characteristic of it.
When looking for items and materials that can reflect nature in your home, consider wooden and rattan furniture. They are comfortable and beautiful, and they have a timeless design. A similar trend applies to kitchen furniture - wood textures and patterns will be very popular.
According to the interior designer, in 2025, old kitchen facades will be replaced by ever-fashionable wooden ones. It is only important to remember that in a modern interior they should be combined with minimalism.
Dark colors in the kitchen
According to M. Bučinskienė, bright, rich colors and chrome surfaces will also return to fashion in 2025: "In kitchens, as in home spaces intended for relaxation, clean lines and functionality will prevail. Hidden storage solutions that make it easier to maintain order will become an important part of kitchen design."
She says that kitchens will feature a contemporary yet timeless style: minimal decor, simple lines, and a modern expression. Dark furniture facades will add warmth and solidity to the space. And for those seeking a sleek, sophisticated, harmonious, and timeless design, materials such as glass, steel, and concrete will come in handy.
Order and peace
Almost every third Lithuanian resident names a tidy and clean home as the main source of psychological well-being, and as many as 40 percent of those surveyed say it helps them feel satisfied and calm.
M. Bučinskienė predicts that this year many will be looking for ways to organize themselves more effectively. "Clutter in closets and cabinets disrupts daily routines. So the beginning of a new season is the ideal time to free your home from unused items and clothes. You can give them to someone, sell them, reuse them or repair them so that they serve as new again, but it is much more important to find storage solutions that will allow you to put everything in its place and reduce stress," says the designer.
If you want more peace at home, she suggests taking three steps: organize your belongings; put them in boxes so they are easier to find and take up less space on shelves, drawers, or kitchen cabinets; and use forgotten corners, narrow niches, and space under sloping ceilings to store things.
