Vilnius University (VU) is starting a new phase of development of the Saulėtekis campus. An exhibition of architectural ideas is opening at the Faculty of Communication, where the future campus renovation projects and architectural proposals for the new Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics (MIF) building are publicly presented to the public.
New faculty buildings are rarely built in Lithuania, so this project marks a very important step for VU. The new modern, energy-efficient and contemporary MIF building will create comfortable and innovative working and learning conditions for students and researchers. The renovated Saulėtekis campus will become more open, modern and better adapted to the needs of the community. This will not only improve the study and research environment, but also strengthen VU's ability to compete in the international scientific space.
"Vilnius University has always strived to be a space not only of knowledge, but also of progress. The development and modernization of the Saulėtekis campus, the creation of a functional and aesthetic environment for the community is one of our most important infrastructure projects as we celebrate the 450th anniversary of VU," says VU Rector Prof. Rimvydas Petrauskas.
Architects were invited to redesign and adapt the complex to the modern needs of the VU community, to propose public space solutions that would strengthen the connection with the pedestrian alley and create spaces for the community. A total of 7 ambitious proposals were received. The aim is to select the best project from them through a competition that will ensure the creation of a modern, sustainable and functional scientific infrastructure. The winner of the competition is planned to be announced in May, and a prize fund of 100 thousand euros is provided for him.
"The international commission will take into account solutions for modern learning and work spaces, so that they are open to communication and collaboration, and adapted to individual work. It is also important that architectural solutions are meaningful, effectively use the area, allow for smooth movement through the spaces without excessive marking and are accessible to people with various physical needs. The aim is for the Saulėtekis architectural complex to be an example of universal design in Lithuania and the diversity of public spaces," says Raimundas Balčiūnaitis, a member of the evaluation commission and Chancellor of Vilnius University.
Vilnius University invites you to visit the exhibition on the second floor of the Faculty of Communication (Saulėtekio al. 30, Vilnius) from April 9 to get up close and personal with the exhibited works and learn more about the vision of VU infrastructure development. The exhibition will be open until May 13.
