See what VGTU's engineering lyceum could look like: 8 proposals submitted

Another school in Vilnius will undergo changes - it is planned to fundamentally renovate the primary education department of the VGTU Engineering Lyceum, located at Nemenčinės pl. 16. Vilnius city municipalities 8 design companies are participating in the architectural design competition organized by Vilnius Development Company, which is developing the project, and have submitted their proposals for how this educational institution should look after reconstruction.

The VGTU Engineering Lyceum currently has about 500 students and about 80 teachers and staff members in the Primary Education Department. After the reconstruction, the number of students will be able to increase to 625.

The task of the architectural competition was to create an architectural and urban idea that meets the client's expectations and complies with modern, rational architecture. Eight groups of authors presented visions of how the school could become modern, functional and adapted to engineering education.

Designers were invited to address pressing issues: energy efficiency, rationality, lack of adaptation for appropriate education in buildings. The architects also had to create pottery workshops, nature exploration and creative workshop areas, outdoor classrooms, and collaborative spaces and shelter.

Ideas will be evaluated according to the following criteria: urban integrity, quality, rationality and functionality of architectural solutions, and the cost of design services for the project idea, which will constitute only 10 percent of the comparative weight of the criterion parameters.

The first place winners of the competition will receive 11 euros, the second place winners will receive 000 euros, and the third place winners will receive 9 euros. The winners of the competition will be selected by an expert commission consisting of the Chief Architect of the City of Vilnius and five other competent architects with experience in designing public buildings.

The first place winner of the competition will sign a tripartite service purchase agreement with the Vilnius City Municipality and the Vilnius Development Company.

After signing the design contract, the winners will have to prepare a technical working project based on their idea within 19 months. After these works, the procurement of contract services will be announced. It is planned that the reconstruction of the Primary Education Department of the VGTU Engineering Lyceum will be completed by the end of 2028.
