A new one is planned to be built in Vilnius Vilnius University (VU) Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics building and to renovate three auditorium buildings - the university invites architects to propose architectural ideas for the scientific purpose complex in Saulėtekis.
"New modern infrastructure is a necessary part of investment in science and studies, creating the conditions for top-level research and to compete internationally. This is part of the further development of the Saulėtekis space as a modern university campus", VU rector Rimvydas Petrauskas said in the university's announcement.
It is planned to renovate the Saulėtekios academic campus in Vilnius, Saulėtekios al. 9, located in three parallel, evenly spaced 8-story group teaching auditoriums and the current Joint Palace - a 2-3-story streaming auditoriums connected to the ends of the buildings in the south, and the university's Information Technology Services Center.
Currently, the Faculties of Communication, Law, Economics and Business Administration and Physics are located in these buildings.
"This complex is an exceptional example of late 20th century architecture that reflects the modernist space planning ideas of that period and is interesting for its exterior details and finishing techniques. (…) The new building planned next to the current complex will be dedicated to the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, one of the largest Vilnius University, which trains specialists in mathematics, informatics, statistics and data analytics," the VU report states.

The works of the competition will be evaluated by an international commission, which will consist of representatives of Vilnius University, Lithuanian and foreign architects with many years of experience in the design of educational institutions.
