The leader of the United States, Joe Biden, has told an important ally that he is considering withdrawing from the country's presidential elections in November, the American newspaper "The New York Times" reported on Wednesday.
According to the publication, Mr. Biden told one of his close allies that he knows he may not be able to save his candidacy if he fails to convince the public in the coming days that he is right for the job.
Doubts about the president's condition and chances to win have intensified after his poor performance in last week's debate with Republican Donald Trump.
The president, who an ally has pointed out is still putting his best foot forward in the election campaign, understands that his next few appearances before the holiday weekend JAV must be successful, wrote The New York Times.
Those appearances include an interview scheduled for Friday with ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos and campaign stops in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
The person who spoke to the newspaper on the condition of anonymity spoke with the president in the past day.
White House spokesman Andrew Bates dismissed the report as "absolutely false" and said Washington had been given too little time to comment on Mr. Biden's situation.
During last week's debate, Mr. Biden kept losing his train of thought, giving rambling answers or staring blankly and his mouth hanging open. This further fueled fears about his age and mental acuity.
Lloyd Doggett on Tuesday became the first US Democratic lawmaker to publicly call on Mr. Biden to drop out of the race for the presidency.
