On August 23-24 in Vilnius and Beautiful "Baltic Cinema Days" will be waiting for the audience on the big screens for the seventh time. Organized by the Lithuanian Film Center event this year will invite you to get acquainted with Latvian and Estonian films, which symbolically unite the cinema of Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia on the anniversary of the Baltic Way. All sessions of the event are free.
August 23 In Vilnius and Kaunas, this year's program will be opened by the political sports drama "Kalev" (dir. Ove Musting, 2022), inspired by real historical events. in 1991 the Soviet Union Championship begins and the Estonian Kalev team has to make an important decision. In the film, the battles on the basketball court merge with the revolution taking place in the streets - people's hunger for freedom and sportsmen's victories.
On the same evening, the "Skalvija" cinema center in Vilnius will also invite the audience to see the Latvian animated film "My Love Romance with Marriage" (dir. Signe Baumane, 2022), which has toured film festivals all over the world and impressed international audiences. The film tells the story of Zelma, her 23-year search for perfect love and a lasting marriage against the backdrop of historical events in Eastern Europe. The film blends historical, biological, societal and emotional arcs with a lively sense of humor and musical numbers. This animated film for adults tackles issues of love, gender norms, domestic violence, fantasy and toxic relationships, promoting a woman's journey towards independence and liberation.
On August 24, Vilnius will also be able to see the only documentary film in this year's program. "Machina Faust" (dir. Kaupo Kruusiauk, 2022) is an unfiltered portrait of the Estonian saxophonist, composer and feminist Marija Faust, whose life is a whirlwind of unbridled creativity.
In both Kaunas and Vilnius, the joint Latvian, Lithuanian and Polish work "January" (dir. Viesturs Kairišs, 2022) will be shown, telling about 1991 in Latvia. Nineteen-year-old Jazis and his friends Ana and Zep are aspiring filmmakers who dream of making films and rush to enjoy the freedom of youth, but the collapse of the region's political system destroys their plans, family ties and friendship. Personal participation in peaceful resistance becomes a defining moment in their maturity. "January" is an autobiographical look at the political turmoil of the early XNUMXs that changed the lives of people in the former Soviet Union.
Free screenings of "Baltic Cinema Days" will be held in Vilnius at the "Skalvija" cinema center, and in Kaunas at the "Romuva" cinema center on August 23-24.
