At the end of the summer, "Baltijos kino dienos" will once again invite movie fans to watch the most interesting movie news from their neighbors. This year, the cinema bridge will cross Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia for the fourth time. August 25-26 A program of films from four important neighbors will be shown in Vilnius - two Latvian and two Estonian feature films and a documentary film. All screenings of "Baltic Cinema Days" are once again free.
The focus of the program this year is on culture and its influence on human personality. "Baltic Cinema Days" will be opened by the Estonian documentary "A Year Full of Scenes" (dir. Marta Pulk, 2019), which leads to a social experiment: the creators of the film offered a special job to a person who has never been to the theater: to go to all theater productions staged in Estonia throughout the year and write their reviews. The film reveals the incredible power of culture to change lives.
Cinema Days year viewers will also see Estonian director Martti Helde's Scandinavian Silence (2019). It is a psychological drama with elements of a thriller, about two people united by a violent past. Their journey to healing will be accompanied by choices that will change their destinies forever.
The Latvian part of the program will invite you to relive your favorite books on the screen. A romantic Latvian comedy based on the novel by the famous Latvian writer Anšlavs Eglitis, Homo Novus (dir. Ana Vidujela, 2018) will take the audience to the artistic bohemian environment of Riga in the 1930s. This is an ironic and nostalgic look at the stylish, intriguing and ambitious decade of the first Latvian Independence.
The program of "Baltic Cinema Days" in Lithuania will also show the Latvian film "Jelgava'94" (dir. Jānis Ābele, 2019), based on the popular novel of the same name by the Latvian writer Janis Joņevs, which was grabbed by the fourteen-year-olds of Generation Z, appreciated and loved by their parents and teachers. The book has already been translated into 9 foreign languages, and in 2014 awarded the European Union literary prize. Through the maturation of a rebellious young man, enriched by metal music, the film reveals a colorful and suggestive portrait of newly independent Latvia in 1994.
"Baltic Cinema Days" will also be held in Riga and Tallinn in August. Latvians on August 23-24. will have the opportunity to get acquainted with the Lithuanian films "Rūgštus miškas" (dir. Rugilė Barzdžiukaitė, 2019) and "Nova Lithuania" (dir. Karolis Kaupinis, 2019). And Estonia on August 26-27. will present the film works "Here was Saša" (dir. Ernestas Jankauskas, 2018) and "Nova Lithuania". The director of the film, K. Kaupinis, is also planning to attend the presentation in Estonia.
