Having recently held a performance by the band "SHORTPARIS" (RU), which enchanted the people of Vilnius a concert, Kirtimim Cultural Center this time presents Hekla, a performer from Iceland who lives in Berlin. March 28, 20 p.m. the upcoming concert will combine Hekla's delicate, fluid vocals with the evocative ghostly sounds of one of the strangest and rarest instruments - the theremin.
Heklos Magnúsdóttir's work combines the dark and magical folklore of Iceland's polar night with the pulsating sounds of Berlin's electronic music scene. The performer has been playing the theremin for a long time - an instrument that produces sound without the need to physically touch it. The spectral, seductive, haunting sound of the theremin complements the gentle vocals, creating an otherworldly nebulous musical harmony.
The theremin consists of two metal antennas that generate electromagnetic fields and two radio frequency generators. By moving the fingers between the two antennas, the electrical impulses are amplified and transmitted to the speaker. The inventor of the Theremin and future spy for the USSR, Leon Theremin, created it by accident almost a hundred years ago while designing a device that could measure the density of gases. It turned out that if you put your hand close to the meter, you can get different sounds. It was later used by both Hollywood for their horror movie soundtracks and The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and The Beach Boys.
"The theremin is a very complex instrument. There are no examples of how to play it. And when you stand in front of the theremin and your body is in a slightly unusual position or you have gained a few kilos, the playing completely changes. Imagine you are a cellist and every morning you wake up with a slightly longer or slightly shorter neck", says professional thereminist R. Schwimmer about the peculiarities of playing the theremin.
As a creative tool, the rarely heard theremin can be expressive, intuitive and versatile. In Hekla's hands, the instrument spans a huge range, from high-frequency bird chirps to low tectonic frequencies.
Hekla's debut album was released in September 2018.А" critics called it one of the most impressive debuts of 2018. An album combining mystical elements of ancient traditional Icelandic chants, Berlin electronica and echoes of nature sounds could be the term Icelandic ambientsynonym. Also, on several tracks of the album, we can hear the Icelandic star Mr. Silla is known to many for his membership in the famous Icelandic band "múm".
