On October 15, at 19 p.m. In the Lithuanian Russian Drama Theater "Vilnius Jazz" festival will start with spectacular premieres. For the first time, the "Improdimensijos" orchestra and the duet of its musicians Kazimieros Jušinskas and DJ Extended (Kristupos Gikos) will take to the stage of the jazz festival.
Saxophonist K. Jušinskas and flautist, improviser, experimental music performer K. Gikas are fellow students, who together graduated from the master's studies in contemporary music and improvisation at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theater (LMTA). They both belong to the "Improdimensijos" movement, which inspired the rise of improvisational music in Lithuania.
K. Jušinskas actively performs at Lithuanian jazz festivals with the groups "Brave Noises" and "Dziazlaif" (with both of them he won the "Grand Prix" of the "Vilnius Jazz" competition). He is also a member of the groups "The Septet", "Castor Stetson" and the saxophone quartet "Katarsis4", participates in various interdisciplinary projects, and engages in pedagogical practice.
K. Gikas, who creates under the pseudonym "DJ Extended", graduated from the National MKČiurlionis School of Arts, continued his classical music studies at LMTA, later turned to improvisational music here, and also studied at The Hague Royal Conservatory in the Netherlands. The performer is a member of the improvisational music ensemble Laivo troupe, actively participates in various projects of this genre, electronic music and interdisciplinary art in Lithuania and abroad.
The duo has been active for the third year, has performed in the "Improdimensijos" cycle "MAMA Studios", to which the brightest stars of Lithuanian and foreign improvisational music are invited, also performed at the experimental music festival in Trakai Vokė, Raseiniai contemporary music festival, on the stages of Holland, Belgium, Germany, Austria .
The electroacoustic project of two like-minded people surprises with a wide palette of non-traditionally produced sounds, sonic surprises. K. Gikas, playing on the turntable, and K. Jušinskas, maneuvering between acoustic and electronic sounds on the saxophone, fused soft noise, interactive musical conversations, elegant melodic lines, "glitch" music, rhythmic "loops" and extreme extensions of both instruments in their works. performance technician.
We will see both performers in the second part of the concert, when the "Improdimensijos" orchestra will take the stage. This group was formed by masters of improvisational music Liudas Mockūnas and Arnas Mikalkėnas from former and current students and like-minded people of LMTA Contemporary Music Master's program.
This program was created several years ago by L. Mockūnas together with the composer Vykintas Baltaks and he invited his good friend A. Mikalkėnas to join the teaching team. The new program even breathed fresh air into the corridors of LMTA, but soon became an integral part of "Improdimensions", a creative platform for improvisation, experimentation and education.
Almost all foreigners who appear in the "Improdimensijos" concert series also conduct master classes for young Lithuanian jazzmen. "Improdimensija" promotes and fosters dialogue between different generations and collegial cooperation. On the "Improdimensijos" stage, together with the brightest Lithuanian and foreign stars, musicians of the young generation also appear. They also present their creations here.
In this way, the students of the LMTA Contemporary Music Master's program bursting with creative energy unknowingly established themselves in the vanguard of the "Improdimensijos" movement and became an integral part of Vilnius underground life.
The "Improdimensijos Orchestra" was finally born from the sustainable connection between students and teachers of the LMTA program. According to its initiators, the two-year Master's studies in Contemporary Music pass unnoticed, it is always difficult to part with students, which is why there was a desire to reunite those who cannot imagine their musical path without improvisational music, share the same musical aesthetics and speak the same language.
According to the musicians, the program of the "Improdimensijos Orchestra" is based exclusively on the ideas of the team members, written in graphic and traditional notation scores. This one concert – a great opportunity to see the professionalism and creativity of our young generation of improvisers.
