The carillon of the tower of the Church of St. Apostles Philip and James in Vilnius has become an integral part of the capital's soundscape. For the seventh year running, Vilnius residents and city guests have been delighted with short carillon concerts every day from May to October. They sound twice a day, at 13.00:19.15 p.m. and XNUMX:XNUMX p.m.
This year's novelty is that on Saturdays and Sundays, at 13 p.m., works by Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis will be performed, which were adapted for the carillon by the Japanese composer and carillonneur Toru Takao, already well-known to Lithuanians.
"This is a unique opportunity to hear a new, unexpected sound of MK Čiurlionis' music, opening from the bells of the church tower. By the way, different works are played every weekend," says Jurgis Pauliukas, organizer of carillon festivals and concerts.
According to the artist, the free concerts last 10-15 minutes and are best listened to in a churchyard or Lukiškiai square, closer to the church.
At the initiative of artist J. Pauliuks, this year the Vilnius Carillon will announce the hours to the townspeople by playing the melodies of MK Čiurlionis, which were also adapted for the instrument by T. Takao.
These projects commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Lithuanian composer's birth.
Short carillon concerts: until October 1st, daily, 13 pm and 19.15:13 pm, weekends at XNUMX pm – music by MK Čiurlionis.
City clock: MK Čiurlionis' melodies announce the hours daily, 9 a.m.–21 p.m.
