On September 15, lute master and experimenter Jozef van Wissem, who charmed the audience and sold out all the records he brought in the overcrowded hall of the Kirtimiu Cultural Center last fall. will hold another one a concert Kirtima cultural center, Vilnius.
Called one of the most interesting figures in experimental music, the creator is known to many for his collaboration with one of the most influential American independent film directors, Jim Jarmush, and soundtracks for films such as "Only Lovers Left Alive","Partir to Live” or for a video game “The Sims: Medieval", but this is only part of his projects - the artist has been creating for several decades. J. Van Wissem has organized more than 800 concerts around the world, performing at such prestigious festivals as ATP ir Primavera Sound. The New York-based filmmaker at the Cannes Film Festival behind the film “Only Lovers Left Alive” soundtrack won an award, and has already released two albums with Jim Jarmush on guitar and actress Tilda Swinton on occasional backing vocals.
According to Jim Jarmush, who met J. van Wissem by chance on the street, the lutenist's style combines minimalism, avant-garde, traditional Renaissance music, but at the same time pulsates with a unique rebellion, because the artist's work sounds new, found in unusual contexts and is timeless. Mr. Jarmush says that he was impressed not only by the music created by Mr. van Wissem, but also by how the performer appreciates and knows his instrument, the lute, and how deeply interested he is in it.
The lute is one of the oldest stringed musical instruments, known even from the time of Ancient Egypt. The name of the instrument comes from Arabic al'Ud (wood chip, incense stick). With its hypnotic and powerful sound, the instrument was popular in the Middle Ages, and variations of lute-like instruments are found in many southern countries. Even lute players used to perform in LDK estates. J. van Wissem learned to play this mysterious instrument in New York, where he could experiment freely, but the artist managed to preserve the unique magical sound of the instrument and its characteristic melancholy, purity, and peace. During the concert in Vilnius, Jozef van Wissem will play a specially made lute for him.
The creator's live performances are intimate events full of mystery. Lithuanian music lovers already had the opportunity to see this musician at the STRCamp festival, when the peaceful sound of the lute crowned the storm that had just broken, as well as last year at Kirtimiu Cultural Center, where the artist was warmed up by Alina Orlova's sensitive project June Drifter. This time Jozef will be supported by Vladas Dieninis, whose drum improvisations and sound vaults intertwine motor kraut aesthetics, subtle hypnosis and multi-layered sound loops.
The event starts on September 15. 20 p.m.
The ticket price is 10 EUR.
