On Thursday, December 2, at 17:00 p.m., Chabad of Lithuania will light the big Hanukkah menorah, which will be standing in Kudirka Square. The ceremony, organized by Chabad-Lubavitch Rabbi Sholom Krinsky, is open to the public and will be attended by diplomats and prominent politicians.
The menorah lighting ceremony will be followed by a pitotechnics and fireworks show.
The menorah lighting is part of the global Hanukkah campaign initiated in 1973 by Chabad Lubavitch Rebbe (Grand Rabbi) Menachem M. Schneerson. This campaign emphasizes and supports the main theme of the holiday - the story of the miracle of Hanukkah.
"The message of Chanukah is a message of light," Rabbi Krinsky added. “The nature of light is that it always wins over darkness. A small amount of light dispels large areas of darkness. One more act of kindness and benevolence, one more flash of light can change our world for the better. The Vilnius menorah is one of more than 15 large public menorahs supported by Chabad in more than 000 countries around the world, which are lit in front of such famous places as the White House, the Eiffel Tower and other famous places, where children and adults from all over the world can discover and enjoy this holiday message."
