June 18 11 a.m. to 21 p.m. Lukiškiai square The Herb market will be held - revived from the 15th century. Ave. Vilnius tradition, inviting Vilnius residents and guests of the city for the XNUMXth time to the celebration marking midsummer, where Rokas Kašėta and the group "Strings Of Earth Orchestra" will perform.
Organized by Vilnius Ethnic Culture Center since 2007 event cherishes the deep traditions of the city of Vilnius and St. John's, also known as Rasas. Written sources say that two days before St. John's Day in the capital, there was a market year for herbalists. According to ethnologist Liberts Klimka, in the square near St. John's bell towers and St. In the yard of St. George's Church (in the current Vincas Kudirka Square), old women from suburban villages or even from further afield used to sell medicinal herbs: "They would simply lay out bundles, sacks, bags of various herbs on the sidewalk and collect them during the appropriate phase of the Moon and dry them in the shade. The whole city is covered in grass! It was possible to buy herbs in individual bundles or in bundles of three or nine herbs - for all kinds of ailments and pains. The old women taught the townsfolk the wisdom of folk medicine."
Even now, herbalists collect or grow medicinal herbs themselves, which are used for the prevention of diseases or the treatment of various ailments, using age-tested recipes. Although for a long time, doctors have cautiously evaluated folk remedies as a real treatment practice, but later they began to see a certain logic in them, emphasizing the empirical nature of folk remedies.
One of the participants of this year's Herb market - herbalist, maker of medicinal teas, educator Giedrė Radzevičiūtė - not only knows many folk medicine recipes, but also follows the idea that herbs teach us how to live. According to her, herbs help to release fear, anxiety, hostility and urgency: "to go through the day with a sense of grace, and to fall asleep at night knowing that the Universe will take care of me."
At the herbal market, Giedrė will talk about her dear craft of herbalism, the heritage of folk medicine, share tips for growing, collecting and preparing tea herbs and recipes for healing teas. Lithuanian herbal teas from the fields and this herbalist's garden will be available at the marketplace.
Representatives of culinary heritage, folk artists, traders will also sell various plant-based products at the Žólyņi market fair. In addition to herbs, visitors to the fair will be able to purchase fruit bushes, fruit trees, flowers, spices and medicinal plants, bee products, natural body care products, linen products, wickerwork, handmade delicacies, and modern health products.
The event is notable not only for its tradition-loving market, but also for its rich cultural program, combining ecological lifestyle ideas and folklore. Authentic creations and music based on folklore interpretations will be played on the stage of Žolynų market, turning the event in Lukiškių Square into a one-day festival.
One of the performers performing here - Rokas Kašėta - is a traveler who plays many musical instruments, a farmer, the pioneer of a new subgenre - džukodelica. The aspiration of an artist who sings in the Dzūkai dialect is to build a bridge between this dialect and modern forms of musical expression, thus giving the dialect a new life, helping it not remain in the past.
The band "Strings Of Earth Orchestra" will also perform on the stage of the Žolyņi Market - a project residing in Vilnius, but sounding all over the world, whose repertoire includes music of various genres inspired by different cultures.
Here you will be able to hear unique interpretations of traditional music: a concert will be hosted by Rugiaveidė and the creative folklore ensemble "Dainaviai" and Austėja and Skomantas Čepuliai, who find peace in Lithuanian folk songs. The party in Lukiškiau Square will be started by the band "Robaksai Folk", playing the music of traditional dances of various European nations.
You will be able to deepen your knowledge about plant nutrition not only by consulting with herbalists, but also by listening to lectures and participating in conversations with experts in this field. In one of them, cultural historian and traditional cuisine expert Ieva Šidlaitė will talk about pickling, a healthy, natural and valuable food processing method that has become popular in the world.
In addition to all the events on stage, there will also be a Game Meadow, where both children and adults will find activities: here, participants will be invited to play fun outdoor games, blow soap bubbles and try their hand at ethnosport events organized by the Lithuanian Trotting Federation.
