The State Forestry Office (VMU) is organizing a nest raising ceremony on the occasion of World Forestry Day on March 21. Everyone who wants to raise nests in forests is invited to it. The celebration will be held in 26 VMU departments.
People are used to building nests in gardens, parks or residential yards, but it is necessary to build them in forests as well. Birds returning in the spring are looking for a partner, preparing for the breeding season and trying to find a suitable place to nest. Some build nests, others settle in nests. It is important that the birdhouse is secure, weatherproof and predator-proof.
According to VMU director Mariaus Pulkauninkas, raised nests can help save some bird species, as they need to find a safe place to nest. These are Ural owls, owls, woodpeckers and other rare birds, for whom the nests become not only a home, but also a refuge from danger.
Nests are mostly built for titmice, terns, starlings and other small birds, as their preservation is directly related to forest protection. Insectivorous birds protect forests from harmful insects and their larvae. The more of these birds there are in Lithuanian forests, the less chemical protective measures will be needed.
The State Forest Office has been organizing the nest raising festival every year for ten years. During this celebration, about 3-4 thousand are raised. nests
In commemoration of the World Day of Forests, on March 21, in Vilnius, the "Birds are coming home" nest building festival will be held in Krakiškių St., Balsiai.
