This year, Lithuania celebrates the 15th anniversary of its membership in the European Union - membership in the economic and political community of twenty-eight European states, which unites more than 500 million inhabitants, among whom the free movement of people, capital, goods and services is ensured.
During the 15 years of its membership in the European Union, Lithuania has become a full member of the European political system and actively participates in the common foreign and security policy - the consensus-based defense cooperation system. This allows not only to secure greater support from European partners for Lithuania's security interests, but also, if necessary, to take joint actions in Europe or beyond. Membership in the EU provided greater opportunities to better implement Lithuania's security and defense interests, participate in joint initiatives to strengthen the EU's military capabilities, receive funding for research and innovation, and thus strengthen Lithuanian army readiness and abilities.
