On July 17, Lithuanians scattered around different countries celebrate World Lithuanian Unity Day. The celebration of this holiday is associated with the legendary flight of S. Darius and S. Girėnos across the Atlantic. The day of the pilot's death - July 17th - means not only a tragedy, but also a decisive feat that symbolically united the emigrants with Lithuania.
Although for a long time July 17th was celebrated only by Lithuanians living abroad, this tradition is rapidly becoming evident in Lithuania as well - the Kirtimiu Cultural Center was the first institution, in 2009. initiated the celebration of this holiday. Later in 2013 in may Seimas supplemented the Law of Remembrance Days and declared July 17 as World Lithuanian Unity Day, and this year Kirtimiu Cultural Center is organizing the celebration of World Lithuanian Unity Day for the eighth year.
An exhibition presenting the activities of the diaspora will be held at the Vilnius Town Hall
This year, in commemoration of the World Lithuanian Unity Day, the achievements of Lithuanian emigrants will be emphasized by introducing them to the residents of Lithuania - an exhibition presenting the creativity, activities and cultural merits of emigrants will be organized. This exhibition will be opened on July 17. at 17 p.m. Located in the heart of Vilnius in the town hall square, will later tour seven Lithuanian cities. The works of photographer Andrew Mikšios, sculptor Nijolė Šivickas, writer Rūta Šepetys, artist and interdisciplinary art creator Ray Bartkaus, directors Vincas Sruoginis and Tomas Vengris, philanthropist, businessman Stanley Balzek, glaciologist, scientist Aušra Revutaitė, conductor Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla and philosopher will be presented during the exhibition. prof. Passers-by 17-18 p.m. will have the opportunity to take a photo next to the legendary plane of S. Darius and S. Girėnas "Lituanica". Although the real "Lituanica" in 1933 crashed during the flight, but the contours and color of the plane are still etched in the memory of many. At the Vilnius Town Hall on July 17. a photo wall will be set up, and everyone who wants to take pictures will be photographed and Polaroid snapshots will be given free of charge by Kirtimiu Cultural Center employees. Passers-by will also be given leaflets presenting the significant activities of emigrants and symbolic gifts.
The event will be crowned by a free band "Garbanotas Bassistas" concert
18 p.m. the musical greeting of the group "Garbanotas Bosistas" will ring out, addressed both to Lithuanians living in their native country and to Lithuanians scattered all over the world, inviting even the calmest listeners to dance.
