The Union of Lithuanian Architects together with the "Vilnius Old Town Renewal Agency" organizes the series of discussions "Contemporary Architecture in UNESCO Territories" and invites you to the first discussion, which will take place in the "Pasakos" cinema in the new Paupios district of Vilnius in the old town.
Modern architecture is side by side with historical architecture - a combination that always attracts close attention and becomes a battleground of opinions. International organizations caring for heritage have long recognized that it is possible to preserve valuable urban and architectural heritage only by using it, adapting it to today's needs, integrating it into the processes of modern city development and urban planning, and this should be implemented by promoting creativity, cultural diversity, and strengthening social structures (UNESCO " Recommendations for the Protection of the Historic Urban Landscape' 2011, ICOMOS Charter for the Protection of Historic Towns and Urban Areas 1987). But how to achieve a quality result?
In the cycle of discussions of the Union of Lithuanian Architects, architects, art historians, cultural heritage specialists, sociologists, representatives of the cultural field and communities will discuss, through concrete examples implemented in Vilnius, how modern architecture can contribute to the preservation and enhancement of the value of UNESCO territories, the social and cultural revitalization of the historical territory, and how we could evaluate the projects implemented in Vilnius.
A real example and topic for the first discussion will be the Paupios quarter. The conversation, which will be moderated by the chairperson of the Union of Lithuanian Architects, Rūta Leitanaitė, will be attended by the chief architect of the city of Vilnius, Mindaugas Pakalnis, the architects who designed the block, Audrius Ambrasas, Gintaras Čikauskas, Edgaras Neniškis, sociologist dr. Tadas Šarūnas, art historian dr. Viltė Janušauskaitė, as well as CEO of Darnu Group Sigita Survilaitė-Mekionienė. It is hoped that the discussion will help highlight the assumptions of the positive impact of modern architecture on historically valuable areas.
The next two debates of the cycle will take place in December - in the reconstructed Vainiai Palace and in the Jonuš Radvila Museum on Vilniaus Street.
