On July 22, the 81st anniversary of the Sumner Welles declaration will be celebrated in Washington Square in Vilnius. This celebration is intended to thank Lithuania's close ally and partner JAV for the policy of non-recognition of the occupation of the Baltic countries.
On July 1940, 23, the declaration issued by Benjamin Sumner Welles, the acting US Secretary of State, officially declared that the USA did not recognize the forced incorporation of the Baltic States into the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
"The Sumner Welles declaration is the best symbol of the unity of the Baltic countries and the United States of America, which condemned the Soviet aggression of 1940 and did not recognize the forced and illegal incorporation of Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia into the Soviet Union, as part of the Molotov-Ribbentrop conspiracy", - inviting to come to the commemoration in Washington in the square, said Minister of Foreign Affairs Gabrielius Landsbergis.
Event the ceremony of honoring the flags of Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia and the USA and anthems will begin on Thursday at 14:00. The guests will be welcomed by Minister G. Landsbergis, Chairman of the Supreme Council of Lithuania - Restorative Seimas, Professor Vytautas Landsbergis, US Ambassador Robert S. Gilchrist and Chairman of the Interparliamentary Relations Group of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania with the USA, Emanuelis Zingeris. Will play during the event Lithuanian army orchestra, jazz group "The Schwings Band" will perform. You are welcome to participate.
The celebration is organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the US Embassy in Vilnius, the Ministry of National Defense and Vilnius city municipality.
