The government has approved new members for the two vacant positions of the board members of the Lithuanian Science Council. At the request of the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports (ŠMSM) and the Ministry of Finance (FM), Dr. Dr. Vilma Popovienė and Klemensas Rimšelis, Director of the Technological Protection Service of State Documents at the FM.
New members have replaced the board since 2017. Rasuolė Lukošė, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, who worked and resigned, and former Vice Minister dr. Giedriau Viliūnas.
The board of the Lithuanian Science Council consists of 9 representatives of institutions interested in the implementation of science and politics. Chairman of the Board - Vilnius University Dean of the Faculty of History prof. Rimvydas Petrauskas.
The composition of the board is approved by the Government in accordance with the Law on Science and Studies and the regulations of the Lithuanian Science Council and taking into account the proposals of the Education and Science Committee of the Seimas, the Ministries of Economy and Innovation, Finance, Culture and Education, Science and Sports and the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences.
The Board is a collegial governing body that submits proposals to the Chairman of the Council regarding the Regulations, the Council's strategic activity plan, work regulations, the strategy of specific competitive funding schemes for scientific research and experimental development (R&D), measures to promote internationality, participation in international R&D programs, national science programs and other long-term R&D program topics, legal acts regulating the establishment of scientific research institutes, their evaluation and transformation, projects and other issues related to the R&D strategy.
The Board evaluates the current year's income and expenditure estimates, last year's income and expenditure estimates fulfillment reports, determines the principles of payment of Council members and experts invited by the Council for the work performed, the principles of avoiding conflicts of public and private interests of Council members, makes decisions on the allocation of R&D competitive funding funds, examines drafts of legal acts regulating the minimum qualification requirements for research workers, science and art doctorates.
