Firefighters, taking care of the safety of the residents, invite the residents to visit the fire stations on Saturdays.
Starting Saturday, the Department of Fire Protection and Rescue invites families with children, young people and older people to visit the country's fire stations, to get acquainted with the work of fire rescuers and the basics of a safe lifestyle.
It will be possible to visit the firefighters throughout this year, every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., the Fire Protection and Rescue Department announces.
"Firefighters constantly save people's lives and property during fires and rescue operations. The statistics of fires and other disasters show that serious consequences can often be avoided. That's why firefighters and rescuers will open the doors of fire stations on Saturdays to share their experience and give advice on how to take care of safety," says Saulius Greičius, director of the Fire Protection and Rescue Department.
During the meetings, officials will explain how to prevent a fire at home and what to do in the event of a fire, show the first fire extinguishing measures, remind why it is necessary to have an autonomous smoke detector at home, and children will be able to try on a firefighter's helmet and sit in a fire truck.
"This year, 45 people died in fires in the country, last year 36 people died in the same period. Every victim in a fire is a huge tragedy for the family and loved ones, Jūris Targonskas, head of the department's State Fire Protection Board, says in a statement. - We want to remind the residents to check whether the smoke detectors at home are still working, whether their batteries have run out, and we will urge those who do not have these devices to purchase them.
90 percent those who died in fires this year did not have smoke detectors in their homes, which could have saved their lives.
According to J. Targonskas, the main causes of deaths in fires are careless smoking and irresponsible handling of fire.
"I would like to remind the residents that they should also not forget to take care of their elderly parents - install smoke detectors in their homes, repair stoves, fix electrical equipment." Only by taking care of each other can we avoid painful disasters," said the head of the board.
