In June, "Sonic Vilnius" sound walks started in Vilnius. This is a series of sound walks implemented by the Kirtimiu Cultural Center, which encourages listening to the sounds of the environment and exploring the diverse sounds of Vilnius microdistricts. In the walks taking place in the selected micro-districts of Vilnius, the registered participants together with the moderators, who explore sound in their creative activities, traveled in small groups along pre-arranged routes, listening to the environment together, and recording relevant, interesting sounds with sound recording devices. November 2 at 19 p.m. Kirtimiu Cultural Center invites you to come and listen to the audio montages of the sound environment of Vilnius micro-districts.
In the summer, composer Yiorgis Sakellariou (Greece) traveled around the old town and Šnipiške with the participants, and radio journalist Marielle Vitureau (France) traveled around Markučius. What is the sound of Vilnius? How do the sounds of Vilnius evoke and create memories? What thoughts and feelings come to us when we listen to the city loudspeaker? How do we relate to the sound environment around us and how do we perceive ourselves within its boundaries? Sonic Vilnius participants examined such questions during a sound walk, carefully listening and recording environmental sounds.
The sound of the city
The initiator of the project, Ieva Černiauskaitė, the project coordinator of the Kirtimiu Cultural Center, in response to the question of how the idea of "Sonic Vilnius" came about, says that a year ago sound entered her routine much more clearly and this encouraged her to constantly pay attention to what kind of sound environment surrounds her in cities. Eve always carries it with her the recorder for the perpetuation of sound memories and states that "it is important for a person to understand the connection with sound and what sound image accompanies him every day, what memories and feelings are encoded in sounds."
According to Ieva Černiauskaitė, the routes were drawn up by the moderators themselves: "Composer Yiorgis Sakellariou drew up a route that started from Europa Square and ended at Vilnele in Bernardinai Garden. In this section, we listened to both indoor loudspeakers and open spacious soundscapes in the city center and in the old town. This audio walk was made up of several stopping points: a shopping mall, a bridge, a churchyard, a square and a city garden. Meanwhile, radio journalist Marielle Vitureau chose Markučius, a micro-district further away from the center of Vilnius. More emphasis was placed on listening during the walking process. Walking along the paths, we listened to the sounds near the train tracks, in densely populated mountainous areas surrounded by nature, in the park near the ponds."
Soundtrack auditions for "Sonic Vilnius" will be held at Kirtimiu Cultural Center on November 2. at 19 p.m.
