Theme "Succulents: variety of shapes, colors and characters" (October 8)
About 300 different succulents grow in the greenhouse of the VU Botanic Garden. These are plants adapted to live in a dry climate, common in deserts, semi-deserts, savannas and other areas where rain does not irrigate the ground for several months or even years. Their parts - stems, leaves, roots - are thick, juicy, turned into water reservoirs. These plants are true extremes.
While walking around the Great Greenhouse, we will get to know the ways in which succulents take water from the environment and are able to save it. How to defend yourself from herbivores and from the scorching rays of the sun. We will test the sharpness of the needles, the fluffiness of the hairs and the smoothness of the wax. We will discuss which of their features we could apply in our living environment and everyday life.
Succulents are one of the most popular indoor plants because they do well in dry ambient air. We often grow cacti. However, we often call all succulent plants by name. Therefore, we will learn to distinguish cacti from other succulents.
And, of course, we will discuss how succulents need to be cared for in order to grow successfully in our homes.
