Since 2014, World Zeppelin Day has been celebrated every first Sunday of February. Its initiator is JAV resident emigrant from Lithuania Jonas Vaičiūnas. On this day, everyone is encouraged to cook and enjoy zeppelins with their families.
Zeppelins appeared in Lithuania around the turn of the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries, probably in Žemaitia, where they came from German Lithuania Minor. Later, zeppelins became a common dish in other parts of Lithuania as well.
Zeppelins can be made from boiled or raw, grated potatoes and meat, cottage cheese or mushroom filling.
Although the origin of zeppelin is a matter of debate, Lithuanians all over the world associate dižkukulia with the national Lithuanian cuisine.
The dish got its name because of the resemblance to the airship built by Ferdinand Zeppelin in 1900. Now they are almost no longer used, but until the XNUMXth century. In the XNUMXs, it served as a vehicle for communications, reconnaissance, and the search for mines and submarines.
MadeinVilnius.lt presents where you can find zeppelins in Vilnius on this day.
