The Vilna Gaon Museum of Jewish History invites you to prepare for a real cultural leap - on April 24, the rebellious exhibition "SK8 ART: Vilnius in the Rhythm of New York" by New York artist Steve Marcus opens!
The artist presents an unexpected series of works in Vilnius – 38 compositions on skateboards. Here – animated characters, the world of underground comics, pop art aesthetics, traditional Jewish and modern symbols of street culture.
In his youth, Steve participated in the counterculture scene, and as he reached maturity, he experienced a creative renewal.
"What I lived by then – punk rock, comics and graffiti art, hip-hop, and what is dear to me now – I wanted to convey through Jewish iconography and a language that everyone can understand – so I chose skateboards," says Steve.
A special place in the skateboard series is occupied by works dedicated to Vilnius. In “Zappa’s Jewish Princess on a Skateboard,” the author expresses his admiration for Lithuanian artists who erected a sculpture of Frank Zappa in the city center – a symbol of freedom of speech and creativity. In another work, the legendary “Džiugas” cheese giant is playfully transformed into a rabbi, and in the third – the Gothic pearl of Vilnius – St. Anne’s Church – emerges from a ritual box.
