The Bank of Lithuania played an exceptional role in the history of the Independent Republic of Lithuania. XNUMXth century twice - in the third and last decades - he had one of the main roles in consolidating the country's political and economic independence.
The Central Bank started its activities shortly after the restoration of Lithuania's independence in 1990. on March 11 in difficult conditions. The Soviet Union declared an economic blockade on Lithuania and applied various pressure measures, one of them being the disruption of settlements, so all measures were taken to solve the problems. It was necessary to form the structure of the Bank of Lithuania, obtain financing, mobilize specialists, take care of premises, communication equipment, open correspondent accounts in foreign banks, and create the necessary legal environment for activity. These tasks were successfully completed.
Today, the Bank of Lithuania strengthens the stability of the country's financial sector, actively acts as a center of competence in financial and economic issues, promotes competition in the market of payment services, and looks for new forms of supervision of financial institutions. As a member of the Eurosystem, the Bank of Lithuania takes care of the monetary policy and economic growth of the entire euro area, which includes nineteen countries with more than 330 million inhabitants.
The exhibition reveals the main events and achievements of the Bank of Lithuania, and tells about the people who created and nurtured this institution. This exhibition is intended to thank all current and former employees of the Bank of Lithuania for their contribution to the history of the independent institution.
In the exhibition, you will be able to see not only three decades of exhibits from the collections of the Money Museum, photographs that have not been exhibited anywhere, but also unique filmed footage from the first years of restored independent Lithuania.
