"For the 20th spring in a row, a lovely gallery has invited me to hang an exhibition, thank you. I thought of making 20 paintings... More came out, because more dreams crowded into a queue, demanding to materialize them," said artist Marius Jonutis about his jubilee personal exhibition "Dreams". The opening of the exhibition in the Vilnius city gallery "Meno niša" will take place on April 13, at 18 p.m.
Marius Jonutis has been cooperating with "Meno niša" since the gallery was founded. Symbolically, last year the gallery celebrated the 20th anniversary of its activity, and this year this honorable number of 20 personal exhibitions also appeared in the work of M. Jonutis.
According to Diana Stomienė, head of the Vilnius city gallery "Meno niša", this annual exhibition of M. Jonutis speaks of the artist's productivity, as well as creativity, creative energy, and consistency. "The artist's spring exhibitions have become a long-standing tradition of the gallery, colorful works - the herald of summer. For twenty years now, Mariau's exhibitions have been a celebration for both the audience and the gallery. Looking at his works, you can read the story year after year, humane and topical themes create the story of Marius's work, regardless of the material or technique", said gallery manager D. Stomienė about the long-term cooperation with M. Jonučius.
According to M. Jonutis, the exhibition "Dreams" does not have one unifying theme, not a series or a comic, only all kinds of dreams, images and stories. "In a dream, as in life, everything seems to be real, but not quite - something goes beyond the limits, is nearby, in a different way. It's the same with pictures, they are not a picture of the world or life, but something nearby, not as it was, but as it would be. They appear in my mind accidentally, without waiting, both day and night, and at the work desk, and in the car, driving potatoes to the Alytus market. Homemade, summer, Ukrainian, Sakartveli, about love and friends," said M. Jonutis.
"I work, I solve problems - composition, construction, colors. How to make it the way I came up with from what I have, what I know, have tried or come up with. Work sometimes has its own way, I find myself sometimes where I didn't plan, but yes, apparently, it was necessary. That game is interesting to me, because of it I get up joyfully every morning, just like a gambler can't wait to get to the casino", added M. Jonutis.
M. Jonutis graduated from the Vilnius Academy of Arts, majoring in graphics, organized more than 50 group and more than 60 personal exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad. The artist mainly creates sculptures, painted wood reliefs, paintings, graphic works and illustrates books. M. Jonutis created over 30 works of art during his 1-year career, most of which found their audience and new homes.
M. Jonutis is also a modern storyteller with images, characterized by a unique sense of a folk tale. Visualizing the plot in his own creative way, he subtly brings to the surface the archaic symbols of the fairy tale, decodes them and creates a fantasy world out of them. In his work, people, mythical fairy-tale characters, and magical objects turn from textual characters into multi-meaningful figures embodying human values.
M. Jonutis's exhibition "Dreams" will be open until May 13 at the Vilnius City Gallery "Art Niša". Sponsor of the gallery - Vilnius city municipality.
