"Once" is repeated in every other tale, and this repetition hides the whole point - that one time is the life of a particular person. On Tuesday, October 29, at 18 p.m., the 13th personal exhibition of paintings and drawings of the artist Jolanta Kyzikaitė "Once..." opens in the Vilnius city gallery "Meno niša".
According to J. Kyzikaitė, many fairy tales begin with the phrase "Once upon a time there lived a grandmother and grandfather, they had a hen and a rooster...". But the phrase "once" is much more important, it refers to the temporality of the one time they lived.
"Once" is repeated in different tales or when listening to the same tale over and over again, and this repetition hides the whole point - that one time is the life of a particular person. We tend to hide behind generalities to depersonalize and hide our impermanence. I want to return to the essence of the fairy tale - that one time", says J. Kyzikaitė about the idea of the exhibition.
According to Diana Stomienė, the manager of the "Meno niša" gallery, this Jolanta exhibition was especially expected. "J. Kyzikaitė's exhibition was last held in the gallery spaces in 2020, next year we presented her exhibition "Masquerade" in Vilnius Town Hall, which traveled to various Lithuanian cities, and we also intensively show the artist's work at foreign art fairs. And now we are happy that Jolanta's works are returning to the spaces of "Art Niša" after a long break," said D. Stomienė.
At first glance, J. Kyzikaitė's painting may be somewhat beautified, playful and illustrative (sometimes it may even remind of fairy tale illustrations), but through this form the artist can also reveal very gloomy current affairs of the day. The images shown in media channels become ineffective over time, the constant depiction and repetition of social problems, tragedies, war loses its "one time" effectiveness. Therefore, maintaining focus requires many new “one-times”.
"The picture happened "once" - it is not repeated, but the audience takes away "once" each personally. I want to follow my own stories based on the principle of fairy tales, which are created in response to events, the environment, and societal problems. Why a fairy tale? What, if not painting, is the closest to a fairy tale", said J. Kyzikaitė.
The painter Jolanta Kyzikaitė is a doctor of art, her work has been presented in more than 100 joint exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad. in 2010 J. Kyzikaitė became the 15st place laureate in the "Young Painter's Prize" competition. "Meno niša" gallery has been working with J. Kyzikait for almost XNUMX years - during this time, the painter has been presented at art fairs in Budapest, Cologne, Berlin, Paris, Brussels, Vienna, Basel, and the artist has also been shown many times at the ArtVilnius art fair. He has purchased the works of J. Kyzikaitė MO Museum, Noewe foundation, Walter Bischoff gallery in Germany and private collectors.
According to art researcher Sonata Baliuckaitė, you cannot confuse J. Kyzikatė's work with anyone else, her individual style was formed at the beginning of her studies. Large format, graphic design, stylized human figures, masks. "The artist works in cycles, analyzing each series of her paintings, it would seem that she touches on the social and political issues of the time. However, if you go back a decade, you see that these are simply common human and eternal issues, important to the creators themselves at that time, as well as to every person sensitive to the environment," said art critic and gallery curator S. Baliuckaitė.
J. Kyzikaitė's exhibition "Once upon a time..." in the gallery "Meno niša" will be open from October 29 to November 16. Exhibition opening - October 29, 18 p.m. The exhibition is financed by the Lithuanian Council of Culture, a sponsor of the Vilnius city gallery Meno niša - Vilnius city municipality.
