Friday, August 19, at 17 p.m. The exhibition "The Sun Entering the Room" by Jurgis Tarabildas, one of the brightest artists of the young generation of Lithuania, opens in the capital's gallery "Meno niša" - an ephemeral collection of everyday events consisting of video and light installations, objects and photographs.
"The light switch (which is not in the room) is switched on not only to illuminate the space, but also to make sure that we are not dreaming," - this is what its curator Vytenis Burokas writes about J. Tarabilda's fifth personal exhibition "The Sun Entering the Room".
According to V. Burok, the works of the exhibition, although independent, are connected to the broader narrative of the exhibition. "The atmospheric soundtrack of the exhibition is created by neon light objects, as if defining the sound background in the credits of the film, although they are silent in themselves - with their help we become more attentive to the sounds of the environment." Audio cues can match or contrast with the viewer's experience. Finally, the exhibition is filled with bright blues that are very often found in Jurgis's work, reminiscent of the capture of clouds against the background of the sky - the works that appear here are left to our imagination; to try to experience them personally and to recognize their "faces" in the clouds, says the curator.
J. Tarabilda's work is constantly changing, it uses different creative techniques. Having paid most attention to paintings in the last exhibitions, this time the artist presents light and video installations, objects, photography.
According to Jurgis himself, the works presented in the exhibition cover several years of work. For example, one of the video installations was created back in 2013, so it seems to mark the very beginnings of the artist's work, which today may be unexpected both for himself and for many who have seen his last paintings, in which one can definitely find a sense of atmosphere and illusion.
"I would describe this exhibition as an ephemeral collection of everyday events. With a minimal touch, I want to create a gap from the supposed reality, in which no attempt is made to explain the hidden meanings of objects or events, to extend and thus question the duration of our perception and habits," says J. Tarabilda about the exhibition.
Jurgis Tarabilda is a graduate of the sculpture department of the Vilnius Academy of Arts, presenting his work both in Lithuania and abroad. The artist's creative profile includes a number of achievements: in 2017 Jurgis Tarabilda's work was awarded the audience prize in the "Young Painter's Prize" competition, and in 2020 the creator was chosen by the audience as the best artist at the ArtVilnius'20 art fair. Presenting his fifth personal exhibition this year, Jurgis works with various artistic projects and has received international recognition. in 2021 his exhibition was held in Riga, in the gallery "LOOK!".
