In Europe, seemingly ordinary coins that, due to their limited edition or exceptional reasons, become real investments are gaining more and more attention. One such example is the Monaco 2 euro commemorative coin dedicated to Princess Grace Kelly. Today, its market value can reach up to 30 euros.
In 2007, Monaco decided to issue a 2-euro commemorative coin to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the death of the famous actress and Princess of Monaco, Grace Kelly. The coin features the princess's profile in the center, a delicate and artistically expressive design that immediately caught the attention of collectors.
An important factor in determining the value of this coin was its very limited mintage. Only 20 pieces were produced in total. About 001 coins were distributed to visitors to a special Grace Kelly exhibition in Monaco, while the rest were sold to collectors.
Why is this coin so valuable?
The value of a coin is determined by several important aspects:
- Very limited edition, which significantly increases demand among collectors.
- Exclusive design, related to a widely known and respected personality.
- Excellent state of preservation – coins in perfect condition, without damage or scratches, are valued even higher.
- Growing interest in collecting commemorative 2 euro coins throughout Europe.
As the portal indicates Chip.de, today, the highest quality Grace Kelly 2 euro coin can fetch up to 30 euros at auctions or collectors' markets. The average price of a coin, depending on condition, ranges between 000 and 4 euros.
Can such coins exist in Lithuania?
Although the Monaco 2 euro coin did not officially enter wide circulation, some copies of it may have reached the Baltic countries, including Lithuania, especially through collector channels or foreign travelers.
Collecting 2 euro commemorative coins is also rapidly gaining popularity in Lithuania. The Bank of Lithuania regularly issues 2 euro commemorative design coins, but their mintages are usually larger, so they do not reach such impressive values as the Monaco coins.
However, experts remind us that it is worth checking the specimens in our wallets or coin collections. Sometimes, even at first glance, a simple 2 euro coin can be worth significantly more than its stated face value.
The broader context of the commemorative coin market
Over the past decades, European countries, including Lithuania, have been actively issuing commemorative 2 euro coins dedicated to historical events or cultural heritage. The value of such coins usually increases over time, especially if the issues were limited or related to special dates.
For example, one of the more valuable Lithuanian commemorative coins is the 2015 coin "Baltic Road", which, depending on its condition, is valued by collectors today at up to several tens of euros.
However, compared to the value of the coin dedicated to the Princess of Monaco, Lithuanian coins remain at a much more moderate price level for the time being.
Monaco's 2-euro coin with a portrait of Grace Kelly has become a great example of how even a small, everyday currency can turn into an extremely valuable collector's item.
This story reminds us that investing is not only worth it in classical values, but also in numismatics - with the right knowledge and a little luck, a simple coin can become a small fortune.
