"St. John the Baptist and St. The Church of John the Apostle and Evangelist (usually called St. John) is one of the oldest Catholic shrines in Vilnius and Lithuania. On the eve of the baptism of Lithuania, in 1386, the privilege to build it was granted by the King of Poland and the Grand Duke of Lithuania Jogaila (1348–1434). Forty years have passed on January 10. During the reign of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Vytautas the Great (1350–1430), it was completed and consecrated as the city's parish church. Exact data on the architecture of the first sanctuary have not survived, but according to the conducted research, it can be said that it used to be of early Gothic style, trinave, hall, somewhat shorter and higher than the current building, yellow and red brick masonry, the walls were supported by powerful buttresses. From this Gothic period, a Gothic portal has survived in the southern entrance of the church," write the authors of the book, Dr. Vaiva Kubeckienė and dr. Ramūnas Kondratas (Vilnius University museum).
