Commemorative bonfires lit up in Independence Square to honor the defenders of Lithuania's freedom.
in 1991 After Lithuania suffered Soviet military aggression in January, thousands of Lithuanian people bravely defended the restored Lithuanian Independence. Defenseless people full of strength of spirit and invincible determination faced the tanks and machine guns of the Soviet aggressor. 14 defenders of Lithuanian freedom were killed by the Soviet aggressor, and hundreds of them were injured. The most important thing in those days was the rallying of people in the face of this danger. Independence Square became a symbol of unity, where people from all over Lithuania stood vigil by the bonfires for many days and nights. Every year, January 13th reminds us of the victory won - the freedom of Lithuania and its heroes - defenders of freedom and strengthens faith in the future of Lithuania.
