Feliksas Jankevičius, CEO of Santara Clinics, admits that the currently rapidly spreading omikron strain of coronavirus is already becoming dominant in the country. However, he also notes that despite the strain's faster spread and rising new cases, the number of patients admitted to hospitals has not increased significantly.
"Despite the very high and rapidly growing number of infections, the number of hospitalizations is not increasing so fast so far. In fact, it remains the same for the last week," F. Jankevičius said at the press conference held on Friday.
According to the professor, at the moment Santara clinics approximately half of the active treatment beds for COVID-19 and slightly more than half of the resuscitation beds are occupied. According to F. Jankevičius, the fast-spreading type of omikron does not require hospitalization, and patients are treated at home.
"We can see from the PCR studies that the omicron really dominates. The difference is that we don't really see very severe cases. They really didn't increase. And, as is known, the number of hospitalizations is not increasing yet. The majority of omicron infections do not require hospitalization. Those symptoms are mild enough," explained the manager of Santara clinics, adding that, however, the situation may change if the number of new cases increases significantly.
"As the number of infections grows faster, such more severe cases may also increase in absolute numbers. We are ready for that," noted F. Jankevičius.
