To honor the memory of the late Pope Francis, the Lithuanian Government has decided to declare a day of mourning in the country. The mourning will be declared on Saturday, during the farewell ceremonies for the pope in Rome.
As decided by the Cabinet of Ministers at its meeting on Wednesday, on this day from 7 a.m. to 22 p.m., state and municipal institutions and organizations, as well as residential buildings, will have to raise the Lithuanian national flag with a sign of mourning.
How to behave during a state mourning?
National mourning in Lithuania is declared not only to honor the memory of prominent figures, but also to remember important historical events or tragedies. But does everyone know how to behave appropriately during this period?
One of the most important signs of mourning is the hoisting of the national flag with mourning symbols. The flag must be lowered to one-third of the height of the flagpole or decorated with a black ribbon, which is attached to the flagpole. This requirement applies to all state institutions and residents.
Those who ignore this requirement may face fines of 10 to 16 euros, so it is important to pay attention to compliance with the rules.
The Lithuanian national flag must be flown with a sign of mourning:
- On the stem: the flag is lowered to one-third of the height of the mast.
- Near buildings: a black ribbon, 10 cm wide and reaching the bottom of the flag, is attached to the flagpole.
The flag must be flown from 7:00 a.m. to 22:00 p.m.
What to do if an event or celebration is planned?
During the days of national mourning, it is recommended to refrain from organizing fun entertainment, concerts or events. If event already planned, it is advisable to move it or at least start it with a minute of silence, honoring the victims or remembering an important event.
During the mourning period, it is recommended to:
- Give up fun events, concerts or holidays.
- Stay calm and focused.
- Honor the dead with a moment of silence or by participating in memorial events.
