Neris Regional Park reported that the water from the Pinyklos spring, located in the Elektrėnai municipality, is unfit for drinking. The National Public Health Laboratory, after taking water samples on June 9, detected microbiological contamination - Escherichia coli (E. coli) and intestinal enterococci bacteria were detected in the water.
Although the levels of nitrates and nitrites did not exceed the permissible limits, the microbiological indicators did not meet the Lithuanian hygiene standard, according to which such water should not contain any microorganisms at all. This means that the consumption of spring water may pose a health risk.
Possible health hazards: E. coli and enterococci indicate possible fecal contamination. They can cause:
- acute digestive disorders: diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain;
- urinary tract, skin or systemic infections;
- fever, general weakness;
- greater risk to vulnerable populations: children, seniors, pregnant women, and people with chronic diseases.
Residents are recommended to:
- Do not drink unboiled or unfiltered Pinyklo spring water;
- Boil water for at least 1-2 minutes before consumption or use microbiological filters;
- Avoid using water for baby food or drinks without additional treatment.
The Neris Regional Park urges residents to be responsible about natural water sources and to constantly monitor published research results.
