President of the Republic of Lithuania Gitanas Nauseda and First Lady Diana Nausėdienė paid their last respects to Pope Francis at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome on Friday.
According to the President, the world has lost an outstanding Holy Father, who, by his personal example, consistently defended every suffering person, all the weak and oppressed in the world, and encouraged sincere daily prayer to strengthen not only oneself, but also one's neighbor.
"With his life, the Holy Father Francis has witnessed an example of modesty, moderation, simplicity, heartfelt service, and deep conscious sacrifice for humanity. Pope Francis said that in times of darkness, violence, and persecution, the flame of freedom does not go out, but inspires hope for a future in which the dignity given to every person by God will radiate in respect, and humanity will feel called to cooperate and create a just and fraternal society," the head of state reminded.
In the words of the President, the memory of Pope Francis, who calls us to bear witness to love every day, will forever remain in the hearts of the Lithuanian people, and the trace of his earthly deeds will accompany us in our prayers, giving us inspiration, determination, and the obligation to create a better, more just, and more sincere world through our daily efforts.
On Saturday, the Lithuanian first couple, along with leaders and royal families from other countries, will attend the Pope's funeral ceremony.
