On November 7, two weeks before the funeral of the rebels found on Gediminas Hill, Lithuanian National Museum invites you to the presentation of the "Memories" of Apolonia Dalevskytė-Sierakauskienė, the wife of the leader of the uprising, Zigmantas Sierakauskas. The book, which has just been published, is the author's authentic story about a man, a family and an uprising. These memoirs were published in Lithuanian for the first time.
Historians Tamara Bairašauskaitė and Jolanta Sikorska-Kulesza, who compiled the book "Memories", state that the history of the uprising is mostly told by men. However, women also wrote a number of memoirs, and their participation and role in the events of 1863–1864 is undeniable.
A. Sierakauskienė's memoirs are neither overly emotional nor overloaded with descriptions of everyday life. Their heroes are Apolonia's brothers Aleksandras, Pranciškus, Konstantinas and Titas Dalevskias and her husband Zigmantas Sierakauskas. Individuals who fought tirelessly for freedom and independence. Apolonia herself, her mother and sisters are mentioned to the extent that they contributed to their activities, which is why all the women of the Dalevskias family suffered the fate of exile.
The author of the memoirs pays much attention to describing the lives of her heroes, their political activities, and the uprising itself, but does not shy away from revealing their private lives, enhancing the narrative's appeal with published letters from her brothers and husband.
However, "Memories" is not a single and coherent story. There are inevitable repetitions in it, because the fates of the depicted heroes are intertwined, the text is written in separate chapters and separate biographies. However, the author wrote a little differently each time. Therefore, the book presents the entire text of the original manuscript without abbreviations and changes.
The Lithuanian translation of "Memories" is a revised and supplemented version of the book previously published in Polish. According to the compilers, in preparing the publication for Lithuanian readers, a number of commentaries on historical events and biographies were adjusted taking into account the latest research on the 1863–1864 uprising.
"Memories" was translated into Lithuanian by Tamara Bairašauskaitė. The publication of the book was supported by the February 16th Foundation.
