Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis confirmed that the remains of Kostas Kalinauskas, the leader of the 1863-1864 uprising, will be reburied in Vilnius.
"All the rebels whose remains are found here in Vilnius will be buried in Vilnius," said the Prime Minister.
ELTA reminds that representatives of the Belarusian intelligentsia sent an open letter to the Lithuanian leadership on Monday, requesting to rebury the remains of Belarusian national hero K. Kalinauskas in Belarus.
"The uprising of 1863-1864 was a struggle of the Belarusian and Lithuanian peoples for their freedom," the authors of the letter emphasize. - K. Kalinauskas was the most outstanding leader of this struggle, the leader of the Belarusian nation, who died for its freedom and dignity. We understand that you, the Lithuanian people, also consider K. Kalinauskas your hero. We understand and respect your opinion that Kostas Kalinauskas should be buried in the right place - in the pantheon of freedom fighters," reads the letter signed by several dozen people. Among them are Nobel Prize laureate Svetlana Aleksievich, People's Artist of Belarus Zinaida Bondarenko, writer Vladimir Orlov, founder of the Tut.by portal Yuri Ziseris, singer Liavonas Volski and other well-known Belarusians.
