On Friday, March 14, a new postage stamp "Lithuanian Culinary Heritage. Cepelinai" designed by artist Daria Podluzhna will go on sale.
The denomination of the future postage stamp is 2,05 EUR, the circulation is 30 thousand. pcs. The first-day stamp will be stamped on the day of issue at Vilnius Post Office, Totorių g. 8.
Considered one of the most distinctive dishes of Lithuanian cuisine, cepelinai arrived in our country more than a hundred years ago. In Samogitia, they likely originated from German Lithuania Minor, and in other regions of Lithuania through Lithuanian Jews who had close ties with the Jewish communities of Northern Germany.
The dish got its name because of its shape's resemblance to the legendary zeppelin airship designed by German General Ferdinand von Zeppelin.
Since 2014, World Zeppelin Day has been celebrated every first Sunday in February. The initiator of this day was JAV Lithuanian Jonas Vaičiūnas. On World Cepelin Day, people are encouraged to make and then enjoy cepelinai with their families.
The postage stamp with zeppelin is the fifth dedicated to Lithuania's culinary heritage. In 2023, a postage stamp with šakočis was introduced, and even earlier – with šaltiborščiai, cottage cheese and cucumbers with honey.
Every year, Lithuanian Post issues 15-20 postage stamps. The themes depicted on the stamps are approved by the Postage Stamp Publishing Commission. It selects objects, commemorations of historical events or phenomena that are most important to the country.
