The government has approved the arrangement and adaptation of the State Jewish Museum of Vilniaus Gaon to commemorate the Holocaust and all the victims of Nazism in memory of the Paneriai Memorial in 2018-2024. for the action plan prepared by the working group formed by the Government. The Paneriai Memorial is a significant monument of historical and cultural memory for the victims of the Second World War, not only on a national, but also on an international scale. Every year, compatriots from Israel pay tribute to those who died in Paneri, JAV, Poland and other countries.
Officials are also held here events, in which, in addition to residents of our country, foreign guests, ambassadors of foreign countries in Lithuania and other official persons and representatives of international organizations also participate.
For more than three decades, the territory of the Paneriai Memorial has not been seriously studied and managed. The action plan created by the government provides for the planning and execution of works on the plot currently managed by the right of use of the Museum and to adjust the boundaries of the Paneriau Memorial - to connect the territories with the newly identified objects relevant to the comprehensive outdoor exhibition of the Paneriau Memorial and the area where the main entrance to the Paneriau Memorial could be installed.
2015-2017 conducting research on the site of the Paneri mass killings and its surroundings here fundamentally changed the perception of the massacre site. Over 100 new German military base objects have been found, some of which are located outside the Museum's property. In order to get a more complete picture of the former massacre site, to understand the functional integrity of the territory's objects, it is necessary to uncover the newly discovered objects.
It is also planned to organize an international competition for the idea project of the comprehensive renovation of the Paneriau Memorial, to prepare the technical project for the construction of the complex renovation of the Paneriau Memorial, and to carry out the renovation of the territory of the Paneriau Memorial and the construction of the informational visitor center-museum.
The current plot of the Paneriai Memorial, which covers an area of 18,93 hectares, houses an outdoor exhibition set up in the Soviet era and a 1985 a visitor center-museum building was built. The latter no longer meets the needs of the Museum - its condition is very poor: the building is not insulated, not suitable for the disabled, there are no engineering communications, toilets are not installed, and the roof is poor.
It is planned not only to renovate the visitor center-museum, but also to equip it with new premises - a permanent museum exhibition of the finds of the Paneriai Memorial and other new spaces.
