The Ministry of National Defense published the lists of conscripts for 2020 on Wednesday.
A total of nine months of service in various positions Lithuanian army 3828 conscripts will start working in units this year.
This year, the conscription lists were compiled for the first time after changing the conscription age, currently it is 18-23 years old. Young people who have just reached the age of majority will be able to be drafted if they are not studying.

Also, for the first time, high school students appeared on the lists. However, once admitted to them, students will have the choice of suspending their studies and performing nine months of continuous mandatory initial military service, or without interrupting their studies, choose the training of junior officer commanders, which takes place for three years on weekends, or study and serve in the National Defense Volunteer Forces for three years.
If none of the above options are chosen, conscripts whose service will be deferred due to higher education would be extended until they reach the age of 26, but no longer than one year after graduation. After graduation, young people will have one chance to enter the conscription lists.
The Ministry of National Defense expects that many young people will continue to come to the service voluntarily, although the number of mandatory conscription is increasing every year.

Permanent mandatory initial military service was renewed in the spring of 2015 in response to Russia's actions in Ukraine.
