As of Friday, a ban on catching mullet came into force in Lithuania.
According to the Department of Environmental Protection, the ban on fishing for walleye is intended to protect the population of these fish during spawning and to increase the stock of these fish. When the walleye ban begins, environmentalists will check whether the rules are being followed and fishing is being done responsibly.
The ban will be valid until January 31, during which fishing for these fish is prohibited in all water bodies.
Also, during this period, fishing is prohibited during the dark hours of the day - from sunrise to sunset (following the entries in the calendar), in the main spawning grounds of walleyes - in the Nemunas River from the mouth of the Gėgė River to the Jurbarkas Bridge and in the Nevėžio River from the mouth to the Babti Bridge.
During the ban period, mullet caught in any way will be subject to administrative liability up to a 300 euro fine, fishing gear, boats and other fishing equipment will be confiscated.
Individuals will also have to compensate for the damage caused to fish resources - to pay 240 euros for each bream caught.
