Already today from 15 p.m. until 20 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 20 p.m. visitors to shopping chains will be greeted by "Food bank" campaign volunteers, inviting them to extend a helping hand to even three hundred non-governmental organizations operating in Lithuania, which help the needy, and in cooperation with the charity and support fund "Food bank", contributes every day so that as much unrealized food as possible in different sectors reaches people's homes instead of garbage bins. It is specified that the autumn campaign of "Maisto bankas" takes place in 69 different areas of Lithuania, in 341 trading places, and it is planned that several thousand volunteers will join the campaign. During the event, buyers are invited to donate non-perishable food products or funds, which can be contributed by calling the short number 1343 (donation 3 euros) and by scanning a flyer handed out by a volunteer at some of the outlets.
It is estimated that last year in Lithuania every fifth inhabitant of the country lived below the poverty line. Seniors, disabled people, large families or single parents are most often deprived. Representatives of "Maisto bankas" say that the causes of poverty for each of them are very different. "Some people experience various disasters - illnesses, accidents, fires, loss of breadwinners. Often they only need temporary help until they recover. Seniors who receive small pensions live in a completely different situation, they are people who no longer have the opportunity and health to earn additional funds for living, they have to be cared for until the end of their lives. People who simply inherit poverty from generation to generation or orphaned and abandoned children, disabled people also have to be supported for a longer time. All these people have very different concerns, but we all want to eat. Therefore, the delivered food truck means not only a more satisfying dinner for each of them, but also the fact that they will be able to save money for their other needs - who will buy medicine, who will have warmer shoes, who will be able to pay taxes for increasingly expensive utility services" - says "Maisto banka". director Simonas Gurevičius.
