Since the earliest times of Christianity, there has been a custom of consecrating medicinal field herbs, flowers, grains and vegetables in the Church on this day. It is believed that consecrated flowers protect the house from thunder, fire, and evil spirits. From olden days, Dzukės used to put a carrot, a bitter gourd, a beetroot or even a head of cabbage in a flower bouquet. The entire family ate the consecrated vegetables and shared them with animal feed, believing that this way everyone would be protected from diseases. The dried herbs were kept in the market behind the paintings of saints, when there was a thunderstorm, they used them to smoke the house, and when they got sick, they drank tea made from them.
For this holiday, farmers baked bread from the fresh harvest and made beer and giro. The whole family gathered to celebrate the herbs, and the family's dead were also remembered. It was believed that those who do not come together to celebrate during Žolina will be poor or will be left alone in trouble. It is a special holiday because a person, having his harvest in the fields, turns to his neighbor and offers him help.
