For two and a half years, the so-called traveling yards have been roaming on Naugardukas Street. There is only one of them left, but the municipality intends to dismantle it soon.
The innovation did not catch on in Naugarduk Street - instead of traveling yards, parking spaces once again appeared.
The representative of the municipality, Gabrielius Grubinskas, said that the purpose of the traveling courtyards was to become heralds of expected changes in public spaces.
"These elements have already performed their function on Naugarduk Street, the possibility of repairing them and using them in other areas of the city's transformation is being considered," said G. Grubinskas.
The municipality cannot answer how much the traveling yards cost separately. They were included in the total estimate for the narrowing of Naugarduk Street.
The municipality presented the traveling patios in the fall of 2020. These are mobile platforms that have given residents the opportunity to temporarily conquer places normally occupied by cars.
Traveling platforms built in parking lots could become a space for children, a conversation space for neighbors or a spontaneous cafe.
However, the municipality that introduced the idea did not consider that the traveling yards in winter only take up space and are not used.
"Streets have been dividing for a long time, now we aim to turn them not only into a place of communication, but also into a space that connects the neighboring community. This project is a kind of Lego in the city, because the traveling courtyards will be able to migrate according to the wishes of the residents, they can be built in different parts of New Town. I have no doubt that this will definitely give New Town more coziness and life", the former mayor assured Remigius Šimašius.
By the way, the idea of traveling courtyards came from the architects of the DO Architects studio represented by his wife Gilma Teodora Gylytė, and they proposed it to the municipality.
"We are constantly thinking about how to enliven the urban space where we work. Street courtyards inspire us to see the street as a public space for people. In this way, the parking lot unexpectedly turns into a playground or an amphitheater for a date and expands the possibilities of using the street, becoming attractive to people. The more activities that appear on the street, the more interesting, more characterful and more alive it becomes on the scale of the entire block or city", GTGylytė, the founder of DO Architects, praised the idea.
Traveling courtyards became one of the planned parts of the narrowing of Naugarduk Street.
Bicycle paths were also maintained on this New Town street, more and more trees and bushes were planted, and squares were installed at intersections.
